We are often asked to explain the precise differences between human resource management and organization development. Many of the people think of it as a same thing. But the fact is that there are more differences than similarities between these two. In this article we will help you to understand the differences in a meaningful way.

No Longer will prosper a business whose human element is ignored. The same message may be derived from the words of Sam Walton, the founder of Wal-Mart. In response to a question that what could be the key factor to the successful organization, his reply was, "People are the key". As a matter of fact, the statement stands out as a guideline for any organization to sustain the human assets; to understand the conceptual dimensions in terms of their jobs and responsibilities; to enhance their morale and positive feelings in such a way that there can be overall achievement in the organizational efficiency, effectiveness and development. Hence, the need of effective man management.

Organizational development (OD) lays emphasis on the work effectiveness, total organizational system and structure by providing the right opportunities to the organization and to its people to their full potential. Being concerned with organizational competencies, it facilitates change and development in people.

OD is closely attached to personnel Management or human resource management which is nothing but management of men.

The prerequisites for the Organizational Development are fulfilled by dint of Human resource Management (HRM) because the HRM is to utilize human element effectively as well as help the organization in accomplishing its goals. As regards the employee morale, it does its best as it is the key to the enhancement of spirit and enthusiasm in the workplace. Being concerned with organizational competencies, it facilitates change and development in people. According to its approach, people are the central resource, therefore, they must be motivated and directed towards the higher level of competencies, performance and growth so that the organization can be run at its optimum results.

Last but not least, it can rightly be said that the organizational development continues to flourish through the effective management of men (HRM). HRM strives to create right attitude, enthusiasm and motivation among employees. It secures willing cooperation and thereby the establishment of such feelings as, "People work with us" not that "People work for us".
